TRANSNET has moved to dispel confusion about the closure of the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe following local and international media reports that the last steam train in Africa has shut down.

Transnet yesterday (June 28) said the service between George and Mossel Bay had been temporarily shut down for maintenance but that it would reopen after six to eight weeks.

The parastatal said it was still engaged in talks with the Western Cape government on future plans for the Choo-Tjoe.
