THE Great Brak River rugby club has joined the George club in appealing against the findings of a disciplinary hearing by the South Western Districts (SWD) Rugby Football Union following an off-field skirmish during a Premier Cup match last month.

Great Brak chairman Rodney Volkwyn said yesterday they had not yet been given a date for the appeal hearing because the transcripts of the six-hour disciplinary hearing were not ready.

He said the match, during which George walked off the field because they were not happy with security arrangements, had been rescheduled for August 14 in Mossel Bay.

“We are not happy with the match being rescheduled. We did not stop the match. It ended because George walked from the field, and they should lose the points, so that forms part of our appeal,” he said.

Volkwyn‘s brother Roy, an SWD junior vice-president, was accused of becoming involved in the incident and was supposed to face an independent disciplinary panel last week, but his case has been postponed to next week.

Both clubs were handed hefty fines for unsporting behaviour following the incident on June 27.

SWD chief executive Willie Small said Great Brak had been fined R2000 for unsporting behaviour and a lack of visible security. They were also banned from five league games, suspended until next year. George was fined R5000 for unsporting behaviour for leaving the field.
