PLETTENBERG Bay has a new radio station aimed at its central business district.

Gordon Hoffmann, managing director of Wave Broadcasting Entertainment, which is the holding company for MC90.3FM, said yesterday they had a low power transmission licence and their staff of nine were on the air around the clock.

Low power transmission is a new level of broadcasting in South Africa.

It was initially aimed at broadcasts in shopping malls.

“Plett’s main economic driver is tourism and we saw an ideal opportunity to provide broadcasting in the Mellville centre and the CBD.

“According to our licence, we cannot broadcast hard news or current affairs, but we’re here to entertain and inform people about what is going on in and around Plettenberg Bay,” he said.

The team often airs feature inserts, including information on hot fishing spots, tourist attractions and facilities.

Chat programmes are also on their agenda. And they will be featuring the upcoming Matric Rage.

“We want to create a vibey, positive station,” said Hoffmann. The company first applied for a licence with the Independent Broadcasting Authority of SA three years ago.

Last December they obtained a temporary licence to broadcast during the holiday season.

MC90.3FM started broadcasting on its permanent licence about a month ago.
