PORT Elizabeth swimming sensation Jessica Liss grabbed four gold medals at the eighth African Junior Championships.

The Collegiate Grade 8 pupil also broke three African records during the swimming competition in Mauritius at the weekend.

Jessica, 13, who took gold in the 50m and 100m breaststroke, 200m medley and relay, arrives back in Port Elizabeth today.

She also broke the African record in the 50m, 100m and 200m medley events.

Proud father Jonathan Liss said he was grateful that all the hard work Jessica put in when preparing for the competition had finally paid off.

“Unfortunately, I won’t be at the airport to welcome and congratulate her when she arrives, but my wife and Jessica’s grandmother will be,” said Liss.

Jessica is the youngest swimmer to have represented Eastern Province and the youngest swimmer to qualify for the SA Nationals. She qualified for the EP senior team at the age of 10.

The four-day event, which started on Thursday, saw South Africa finish the competition with 50 gold medals, 25 silver and 23 bronze.

Swimming South Africa chief executive Shaun Adriaanse said SA swimming had once again shown its depth in quality across all age groups and at senior level.

He said there was “much talent to be nurtured as far as building stars ... is concerned”.
