EASTERN Cape police traded their blue uniforms for red T-shirts and sneakers in commemoration of World Aids Day yesterday.

About 420 members of the Nelson Mandela Bay police force came out in full force to partake in the 7km fun run from Kings Beach to Pollok Beach then back to the starting line in Humewood.

Commissioner Dawie Rabie encouraged police members not only to “serve and protect” but also to take part in a collective response to stop infection and to take responsibility.

“We must all pledge a commitment that we care. I am responsible, South Africa is responsible and the South African police are responsible,” Rabie said

The enthusiastic crowd was entertained by a social worker who took on the role of master of ceremonies Zimasa Nduluka.

“In the morning we put out about five boxes of condoms and at night the boxes are empty so we are definitely taking responsibility,” she joked

Spokesman Captain Johann Rheeder said he was very pleased with this year’s turn out.
