NEXT year’s The Herald Volkswagen Cycle Tour promises to be bigger and better than ever, with opportunities for the whole family to take part in the biggest cycling event in the Eastern Cape.
Organisers said the tour, which takes place on the weekend of February 6 and 7, will be now more family-orientated than ever before. Children have the opportunity to race with their parents in the less demanding races and in the 30km family fun ride.
Greg Scott and his sons Keegan, 15, and Matthew, 12, will be taking part together in this year’s tour, while mom Tracey and daughter Erin-Jo, 9, cheer them on. Tracey Scott said the family loved cycling together as it kept them fit, healthy and close.
“Not only is it great for their fitness and wellbeing, but it also keeps the boys away from PlayStations and other digital things. They simply love it and cycling is such a great sport,” she said.
Scott also said her husband had definitely had a hand in influencing their sons to take up cycling, as he has competed in the Ironman contest seven times. She said both her sons now also competed in triathlons.
Younger children will have a blast taking part in the Axxess DSL Kid’s Challenge on Saturday, February 6, shortly before the family fun ride takes place. On the same day, the mountain bike events will also take place in Addo.
The gruelling 105km Cycle Tour, which starts on Sunday, February 7, is a seeding event for the 2011 Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour.
Participants in the Volkswagen charity cycle and fun ride events scheduled for January, and all participants in The Herald Volkswagen 2010 Cycle Tour road and mountain bike events – excluding the kiddies’ rides – will be eligible to take part in a lucky draw for a brand new VW Polo.
Entry forms are available from cycling shops and online at www.heraldcycletour.co.za
