ANC Western Cape opposition leader Lynne Brown has questioned what has happened to the Liquor Act after seven months.
Brown said in the pre-election period the DA had recklessly led the charge to adopt the harshest possible clauses in the draft Bill.
“The DA proposed that no licences exist in any residential area and roundly criticised the ANC-led government for its failure to implement the Act. But ... seven months later citizens of the province would be entitled to ask, what has happened to the Liquor Act?”
The Western Cape provincial government had wanted to amend the hours liquor could be sold.
Legislative consultant at the Federated Hospitality Association of South Africa Peter Cumberledge, said yesterday: “The new draft basically confirms the rights of municipalities to establish liquor trading hours without any interference from province.”
