NEARLY half of all accommodation establishments in the Western Cape have been booked for the 2010 Fifa World Cup next month.
Provincial Finance, Economic Development and Tourism MEC Alan Winde said on Monday many establishments had changed their pricing approach from charging above peak season rates to peak season or even off-peak rates.
According to research by Cape Town Routes Unlimited, the province’s destination marketing organisation, and a survey by CapeInfo, by the end of March 46% of Cape Town’s hotels, guesthouses, B&Bs and self-catering accommodation had been booked for June compared to 38% for the same period last year and 57% in 2008.
Hotels received the most bookings, followed by guesthouses and self-catering accommodation.
Outside of Cape Town, the Cape Winelands proved to be the most popular for World Cup accommodation bookings by the end of March, followed by the Garden Route and Klein Karoo.
Three international football teams – Japan, Denmark and France – their officials and accompanying media will be based in George and Knysna.
According to CapeInfo’s survey, the hospitality industry adapted their pricing approach, with almost half charging the same or less than peak season rates.
