Blasé offers a touch of warm sophisticationBy HAGEN ENGLER SPOTTED recently at Central’s Speakeasy was a five-piece R&B and Afro-jazz outfit bringing a warm dose of smooth melody to the Westbourne Road hangout. Adding another string to this diverse venue’s bow was the band Blasé, playing
a sophisticated blend of jazz, soul, rhythm ’n blues and African traditionals.
The group is fronted by pocket dynamo Thembisa Fobe, whose petite frame belies a belting soul voice able to reach any note you care to name – with passion too. A professional sound balance allowed the cosy but supportive audience to appreciate the band’s sublime musicianship and the subtle nuances of their uplifting repertoire. In true soul tradition, these guys and girls are masters of their craft, but they play with the kind of nonchalance which relaxes the audience and makes for a jovial atmosphere. The band, formed in Johannesburg, but recently relocated to the Bay, also features Dennis on bass, Mzwanele on keyboards, Thami on drums and Faith on backing vocals. Together they provided a jaded pubgoer with a truly pleasant Tuesday evening surprise.
