List of artists for Mandela SOS concert still growing

Johannesburg – Where the sounds of political prisoners pounding hammers once reverberated, the sounds of international stars making music will soon by heard in the Mandela SOS human rights concert on Robben Island in February.

The Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart, Yusuf Islam (formerly Cat Stevens), Bono, Baaba Maal, Macy Gray, Nelly Furtado, Jimmy Cliff, Coldplay, Mos Def, Deborah Cox, Ms Dynamite, Shaggy, Eve, Ludacris, Lamya, Angelique Kidjo, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Johnny Clegg, Bongo Maffin, Vusi Mahlasela, Femi Kuti and Queen have already confirmed their attendance, say organisers. Additional artists will be announced in the coming weeks.

The artists will be performing, on February 2 within the walls of the notorious maximum-security prison where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years behind bars. They are coming to answer Mr Mandela’s call to eradicate Aids.

The former president, supported by Oprah Winfrey, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Richard Branson and Naomi Campbell, has asked the world not to be a silent witness to the devastation caused by HIV/Aids, “but to answer our SOS by raising both the awareness and the funds needed to fight and win”. – Sapa
