Upington farmer shot dead in his home

Kimberley – A farmer from Upington in the Northern Cape was shot dead in the kitchen of his home yesterday morning, police reported.

Superintendent Rita Crafford said Johan de Jager, 55, who farmed at Uap, about 15km from Upington, apparently surprised an intruder when he returned home after taking his daughter to an acquaintance with whom she was to travel to Bloemfontein.

Mr De Jager’s wife had left for church in her own car and there was nobody home.

The intruder was apparently surprised in the kitchen, as Mr De Jager was shot in the face as he was entering through the back door. He died instantly, said Supt Crafford.

A neighbour who lives about 100 metres away heard a shot, but thought it was a door banging. When the neighbour walked past the house about 15 minutes later he saw Mr De Jager lying in the doorway and called the police.

Some cash and a few items of jewellery were missing from the house, said Supt Crafford.

Police were investigating. – Sapa
