PSL thriller on the cards

Johannesburg – For both Moroka Swallows and Santos, today’s Castle Premiership clash will have different meanings.

The match will be played at the Rand Stadium and kicks off at 4pm.

For the People’s Team, the match will mean a continuation of their good form thus far. They picked up a point in Giyani, and then on Sunday claimed the scalp of Sundowns in a sensational 3-1 victory that moved them to fourth position on the log.

However, it has been nearly three years since Santos beat Swallows in a Castle Premiership clash, and since that victory Swallows have won three of the last four times the two sides have met in the league.

But, maybe Swallows are ready for the taking, especially since the form of the Dube Birds of late has not been the best. The only two matches they won out of the four they have played so far, have been in the SAA Super Eight cup competition. In just over a week they will meet Jomo Cosmos in the final, and their minds may still be focused on it.

Swallows last played in a cup final in 1991, so it is an occasion that all at the club would not want to miss.

A lot of people have been predicting the demise of Santos, a side that has not gone into the transfer market in the off-season. They have preferred to stick with the ageing team, and coach Boebie Solomons who has an indifferent record at this level.

As for Swallows, although they want to win the cup, they also know that their league form is important, as they have a long, hard season ahead.

Coach Gavin Hunt is unlikely to be back for this match because he is on a coaching course in England.

Nevertheless, Swallows should be able to pick up all three points in what will be a good clash, as both sides play attractive fast-flowing football.
