By Jimmy Matyu

A FORMER matron of Empilweni Hospital, Nokulunga Bellina Kwatsha, has died.

She is to be buried at Forest Hill cemetery tomorrow.

Mrs Kwatsha (nee Nomga) – described as a “selfless, hardworking and persevering community leader” – died last week at the age of 67 after a short illness.

She receiving her nursing training at Livingstone Hospital where she later became a nursing sister.

Mrs Kwatsha, who was born at Middle Tyira in the Qumbu district, was appointed matron at Empilweni in New Brighton in 1986 and retired in 2001.

ANC regional secretary Vuyo Toto said Mrs Kwatsha had “dedicated her time in establishing, building and strengthening” the ANC’s structures.

He said she was elected the first deputy chairman when an ANC branch was launched at Overbaakens in 1997 and later served as the co-ordinator of membership recruitment.

“She was indeed a selfless, hardworking and persevering community leader,” he said.

Mrs Kwatsha leaves her husband, Sydney, and two children, Mandla and Nandipha.

ANC regional executive member and MPL Thobile Mhlahlo will represent the organisation as a speaker at the funeral service for Mrs Kwatsha to be held at St Francesco Catholic Church in Charlo tomorrow at 8.30am, after a short service at 34 Pine Road, Overbaakens, at 7am.
