Investigation into 1 200 corruption cases completed By Patrick Cull, Political Correspondent Cape Town – More than 1 200 investigations involving corruption and other offences, managed by the interim management team in the Eastern Cape, have been completed. Of those found guilty, 42 per cent have been dismissed, Public Services and Administration Minister Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi said yesterday. The IMT was sent to the Eastern Cape at the request of Premier Makhenkesi Stofile. Briefing media, Mrs Fraser-Moleketi said that in addition to audits relating to items such as procurement, hospital stock, and petrol card abuse that had been completed, some 1 323 cases had been managed by the team. Of the completed cases, she said, 286 involved theft and fraud. In addition, the minister revealed, two heads of departments were being disciplined for transgressions of the Public Finance Management Act. She said as far as basic management was concerned, new procurement regulations and frameworks had been put in place along with financial management support, supply chain management support and human resources support for two years “to set in place sustainable capacity”. In addition, backlog payments of R86,8-million had been made. The minister said internal audit functions had been established in the four IMT departments and audit capacity had been brought in for two years to assist them. Mrs Fraser-Moleketi said critical vacancies were being filled and a “huge number” of posts in the health department had been advertised recently. A scarce skills strategy was in place, especially in rural areas.
