Police offer reward over assassination By Jimmy Matyu POLICE are offering a reward of R200 000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those who assassinated education district manager Michael Makhoabane, 50, in Alice, about six years ago. Provincial police spokesman Captain Theodore Mngconkola said on July, 1998 at about 8pm Mr Makhoabane was gunned down execution- style as he was entering his home’s garage at New Rest township in Alice. It was alleged that the assassin (or assassins) was waiting for him next to the garage. Capt Mngconkola said his family, who was inside the house, heard several gunshots and quickly phoned the police who on arrival discovered his body riddled with bullets. Capt Mngconkola said it was alleged that soon after Mr Makhoabane’s appointment, he encountered problems with teachers and other staff in the Alice district. “His private vehicle was damaged, a hostage drama took place at his office, marches and protests by teachers and other personnel against him took place,” she said. A fortnight before his death, some teachers staged a mock funeral. Contact Capt Eric Soci, (043) 731 1124 or 082 9687580.
