Why Luke is not in the Bok squad

By Lourens Schoeman

THE riddle of young rugby star Luke Watson’s omission from the Springbok squad may be cleared up later this week when the squad for the U-21 World Championship is announced.

Watson is currently in Potchefstroom at an U-21 training camp and according to sources he is expected to be named the team’s captain. The squad leaves for Scotland at the end of next week for the tournament.

The young Boks’ first match will be on June 11.

Several prominent Springboks such as newly-appointed Bok captain John Smit, South African-born ACT Brumbies wing Clyde Rathbone, Victor Matfield, Pedrie Wannenburg and Jaco van der Westhuyzen have all come through the U-21 ranks.

The young Sharks and former Grey and Eastern Province flanker also captained the South African U-19 team in his Grade 12 year at Grey. When contacted in Potch for comment yesterday, Watson did not want to comment on his chances of being named captain or his disappointment over being left out of the Boks.

“It will be a huge honour and privilege for me to play for the U-21 team and I have my sights firmly set on that,” he said.

A shadow team will play against Potch University tomorrow after which the SA U-21 squad is to be announced.

“Luke is tipped to be named as captain of the squad,” the source said.
