2 Rottweilers + 1 rat = R20 000 damage!

By Taralyn Bro

East London – When two Rottweilers smelled a rat trapped in the engine of their owner’s car here they got straight to the business of sorting it out – and caused damage which could cost about R20 000 to fix.

“I was woken up by the most terrible noise just after 1am,” said Debbie Sansom. When she went outside to check on her Rottweilers, Brutus and Selby, she almost didn’t recognise her red Honda Ballade.

“They basically ripped the car apart to get the rat stuck in the engine compartment. I’m surprised they’ve got any teeth left!”

Mrs Sansom estimated the damage to be in the region of R20 000. “They chewed the fenders, ripped the wheel arch out, chewed the bumper, bonnet, fender and all four doors. This just shows what two dogs and a stupid rat running through the yard can do.”

In the end, the rat got away. As Mrs Sansom started the car it jumped out and ran across the road.

Luckily Mrs Sansom is insured. The assessors are citing “malicious damage” as opposed to accidental.

But Mrs Sansom is adamant that her dogs aren’t malicious at all.

“They’re not usually aggressive. I think they were just having fun.”
