New dates for PE and District champs

NEW dates have been set for the annual PE and District tennis championships after they were postponed from last weekend because of a lack of entries.

Following a meeting on Wednesday, PE and District tournament director George Holloway said yesterday the event would now be held on the weekends of July 24 and 31.

“This means the winter leagues will only start in mid-August, but we will still have enough time to complete them in the normal time,” Holloway said.

The PE and District cannot be played earlier in July as it would clash with two junior tournaments. By avoiding a clash with those events, Holloway said they were hoping for a good turnout from both senior and junior players.

The organisers will be using several channels of communication to advertise the event and hopefully they’ll get a more positive response this time.

As the only senior singles tournament in the province, it would be a sad day for EP tennis if the tournament fell away through a lack of interest.

THE EP Tennis Coaches Association is holding a beginner tennis instructor (BTI) exam at Young Park next Saturday, May 29.

The course will run from 9am to 3pm and costs R50. There is no charge for previously disadvantaged individuals.

It is open to those coaches who have attended a BTI course and have completed 10 hours’ practical coaching. Hennie de Klerk (582 2563 or 082 780 7040) can be contacted for further information.
