Richmond and Tiran win junior tennis titles MICHELLE Richmond and Andri Tiran emerged as the U-18 singles champions when the third leg of the Eastern Cape tennis Mini Series was held in Port Elizabeth at the weekend. Rain on Sunday forced the organisers to reduce the semi-finals and finals to a pro set (first to eight), which created a lot of pressure for the players. Richmond confirmed her top position on the Mini Series leaderboard by defeating Nicole September 8-5 in the final. In the boys’ U-18 final, Tiran won a close duel with fellow EP player Eric Fisher, beating him 8-7. A total of 152 juniors competed in the third and penultimate leg of the Mini Series. The leading players after the fourth and final leg in East London from August 7-9 will qualify for the Masters tournament, to be sponsored by Old Mutual. For information on the final leg, phone Yvonne Vermaak ( 582 3425 or 073 367 6791). This past weekend, the U-12 girls section provided strong competition with four players ranked in the top 33 in South Africa contesting the singles. Sarah Ive (Border) overcame a concerted effort from Gauteng East’s Chanel Simmonds to take the title. The next event on the EP junior calendar is the PE and District winter junior ranking tournament from the July 12-15. Entries are available at Brian Bands Sports or you can phone Yvonne Vermaak.
