Seventh suspect arrested in R12,4m bank robbery case A SEVENTH suspect has been arrested in connection with the R12,4-million robbery at First National Bank in Kempston Road. Abram Morake Motlaila, 26, of Section C, Mamelodi, Pretoria, appeared briefly in the Port Elizabeth magistrate’s court yesterday. He is charged with armed robbery, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition and kidnapping a security guard. His bail application will be heard on July 2. Mr Motlaila was arrested on Monday and two more suspects are expected to be arrested and appear in court tomorrow. The other suspects are Monare Selokane, 33, of Midrand, Michael Jila, 33, of Diepkloof, Soweto, Benzile Zwane, 34, of Hlakula Street, Orlando East, Mzwakhe Gacula, of Yako Street, Zwide, Bheki Xaba, 34, of Ridgeway, and Oupa Matubela, 39, also from Gauteng. Their case will be heard again on August 3. The State alleges that on January 4, 2004, a group of armed men made their way into the FNB branch situated between Hoch Street and Kempston Road in Port Elizabeth. They allegedly kidnapped a security guard and later broke the bullet-proof window of the cash depot. They then allegedly drilled into the bank vault.
