Smelter proponents blind to health issues THE letter “Risks inherent in aluminium smelter minimal using latest technology” (The Herald, March 14) was misleading. This was nothing more than a “red herring” to try and appease the population of Port Elizabeth and further afield. Why do developed countries in the northern hemisphere not want industries classified as toxic like smelters, despite fulfilling guide lines as laid down by the World Health Organisation? Adding to the tragedy of this investment decision that makes it unique, is the location, next to a prime agricultural area and the world-class tourist attraction, malaria-free Addo Elephant Park. All involved in the smelter issue have without a doubt been blinded by the economic benefits of this smelter with no regard to the health and pollution issues. Des Galloway, Uitenhage news
