I AM amazed at the lack of concern shown by our mayor and the municipal manager for the wellbeing and safety of numerous loyal and long-serving officials in the various departments housed in the Eric Tindale building and Brister House. My attention was drawn to the problems at these two buildings on Wednesday, February 27, when I was phoned by an official describing what was going on, including threats and physical attacks on officials who dared to continue doing their work!...more
RACISM! It‘s an ugly word. Just like “cancer” and it‘s eating at the heart of South Africa. Racism is prominent in white people and black people....more
I WOULD like to say how grateful I am to see so many compassionate people in this world. I only arrived about half an hour after the accident on the Draaifontein crossing, my brother, Tyson, who had first aid experience, and my father being among the first few on the scene (“Driver critical, pupils hurt in stop-street smash”, The Herald, March 12)....more
IT is always a pleasure to read Traci Mackie‘s cheerful optimism. Like some of us, she definitely belongs to the “glass half full and not half empty” club. Reading her opinion piece in the Tuesday, March 11, issue of The Herald titled “Being optimistic about future when all around is gloom and doom”, I was reminded of how the late prominent Port Elizabeth businessman “JJ” reacted in times of confusion and uncertainty....more

THIS letter is to the MEC of health in the Eastern Cape with the hope that she will read its contents and heed them. Ms MEC, I am a very worried, angry and traumatised father of Mamela “Miracle” Tyibilika-Williams who is lying very sick (together with other babies of her age) at Dora Nginza Hospital due to a gastro-related illness....more
THE furore regarding the scandal at the University of the Free State can well be understood, although the resultant intensity thereof is a bit overboard. Anyone having been schooled 56 years ago, as I was, on the Free State platteland, will know that the Reitz “four” did not remotely consider the humiliating aspect of their actions, as this has been going on since Jan van Riebeeck landed in the Cape in 1652....more
“PERMANENT education posts to be boosted by thousands” (The Herald, March 12). Well done, this is an excellent decision by the Eastern Cape education department....more
NO illusion! I have in my possession a unique picture. Because of its extreme rarity I am sure it has high value and I am willing to consider offers for it....more
I AM a Mill Park resident and a Grey parent, but never have I experienced such disrespect from parents and particularly from the junior school. Please obey the traffic rules and do not do illegal U-turns at the Ramsay Avenue stop street....more
I WISH any one of the respondents could walk a mile in my shoes. Racism is alive and well in South Africa....more
WHEN I read the report on dumping of babies (“Mother abandons babies in bushes”, The Herald, February 27) I wondered whether anybody would play the abortion- equals-murder card....more
TO the uniformed municipal traffic official driving in an unmarked, apparently civilian vehicle (a maroon VW Caravelle) in Circular Drive at about 5.40pm on Wednesday, March 12: what a wonderful example you and your passenger were not setting to other motorists by not wearing seat belts!...more news
