‘Tsotsi‘ stars talk of the town on new East Cape film set Tim and Sharon Salmon HERALD CORRESPONDENTS THE northern Eastern Cape town of Barkly East is abuzz with movie-makers, actors and crew who are filming a new romantic comedy in the area. Renowned journalist and producer Jann Turner has spent the past two weeks in Barkly East and surrounds to direct White Wedding. The film, to be released next year, stars South African actors Kenneth Nkosi and Rapulana Seiphemo, who are also co-writing the screenplay for the movie with Turner. Both Nkosi and Seiphemo are known for their roles in the Oscar-winning South African film, Tsotsi. Seiphemo also starred in Generations, My Children My Africa and Muvhango. Turner, who won an Emmy for her work on the National Geographic film, Wolves of the Air, told The Herald: “We love being here. Everyone has been so helpful and warm.” However, she did not want to discuss White Wedding just yet. Turner spent two years covering the Truth and Reconciliation Commission for the SABC and is also the co-creator of award- winning TV dramas like Mzansi and Hard Copy. Also an accomplished author, she is the daughter of Rick Turner, the Natal University academic and anti-apartheid activist assassinated in 1978. The actors involved in Turner‘s latest project have been kept frantically busy and off-limits to the media. Award-winning English actress Jodie Whittaker has a role in the movie, as do well-known South African actors such as Jessica Haines and Marcel van Heerden. “Having these famous guests with us has been lovely,” said Barkly East guest house owner Adri van Niekerk. “We‘ve enjoyed them so much. They are full of fun and are just normal people.” Liza Myburgh, who has a guest cottage in the town, said excitedly: “I haven‘t seen much of Marcel van Heerden, who‘s a guest with us. “I asked him about his movies, but he says he never watches his own movies. “It‘s nice having someone like him in our cottage. I must get him to write in my guest book.” Resident Brenda Mollentze said: “I just wish we had more time to kuier (socialise) with them.” news
