Govt doesn‘t see racism in black on white violence

THERE is a saying, empty barrels make the most noise. This is an appropriate description of our present government, led by our president, Thabo Mbeki, who in his Freedom Day address stated that racism remained a scourge in our country and needed to be rooted out....more

Concentrate on food farming in rural areas

THE Mhlontho Municipality, which covers the towns of Qumbu and Tsolo, has been provided by the Job Creation Trust (JCT) with an amount of R1-million to plough into one of the poorest region in our country crops for bio-diesel fuels, soap and glycerin from waste products (“Bio-fuel pilot project to create jobs in EC”, The Herald, April 28). Further facts are 88 per cent of the area‘s households live below poverty lines and 70% of the population is unemployed....more

Re-adapt to more natural way of life

I FIRSTLY want to thank and congratulate Noelene Jorgensen for her letter (“Cuts highlight the need to conserve resources, The Herald, April 29). It was well done and to the point....more

Don‘t just moan, find alternate power sources for when electricity‘s out

AFTER reading The Herald dated Tuesday, April 29, I realised that on just about every page was an article or letter pertaining to load-shedding and the effects thereof. Aren‘t we all sick of hearing about this crisis, and aren‘t many of us conveniently learning to use this problem as a means of being unproductive?...more

Fitting that protest play staged in Bay

IT was fitting that this watershed of a play, Sizwe Banzi is Dead, came full circle where it all started, here in Port Elizabeth, although it has been staged in more illustrious venues – Baxter Theatre, the Market, West End, Broadway, to mention a few. Its humble beginnings (at the St Stephen‘s Church Hall in New Brighton) signify a natural process of growth and coming into its own....more

Remnants from past continue to decry new SA

THE 1994 political transition in our country was inevitably bound to bring about frustrations, anxieties, anger, bitterness and uncertainties. The enormous task of dismantling the entrenched legacy of our colonial and apartheid past clearly was never going to be an easy thing....more

Set up system so theft can be reported

I CAN only support the call by Roudene Slabbert, of Uitenhage (“Check till slip and watch your change”, The Herald, April 23). The practice is alive and well in Port Elizabeth supermarkets....more

Cat enclosure built with generous help

THANK you to all the generous animal lovers for your wonderful donations to enable us to build a cat enclosure for the Save-A-Pet cats with disabilities. There are 10 of them, no room for them at the kennels....more

Contributions appreciated

THANK you is not always adequate to express the heartfelt appreciation of what others have done for me and my husband, and the warmth of their wishes and encouragements they sent my way to lessen the blow of his sudden passing....more

ANC must retain freedom of expression

READING the comments of ANC president Jacob Zuma (“Zuma warns ANC of serious action if division continues”) and ANC national executive member Makhenkesi Stofile (“Stofile warns rogue element”) in the January 14 issue of The Herald, one hopes the desire for unity within the ruling party does not stifle normal political activity within a democratic party....more

Information on killings sought

I HAVE tried to access the internet for any information on the Felix Coetzee/Scott Ayton murders of some years ago in Walmer. I was resident in Port Elizabeth at the time and have interest in the case....more

Changed channels because of the monotonous music

THE letter, “Same song played three times during the morning” (The Herald, May 1), showed that Algoa FM has not improved. I ceased to listen to Algoa FM about five years ago for the reason that the listeners are inundated with the same monotonous music....more

Is municipality liable when it let account run to R22000?

I WOULD like someone at Nelson Mandela Municipality to please answer my question. Is it appropriate for the municipality not to cut your lights if you don‘t pay?...more

Potholes‘ll turn into coal mines and then shafts to Oz

DO motorists realise why potholes are not repaired and Minis can easily disappear into them, never to be seen again? Alec “The Mouth” Irwin and “Dozy” Pahad have got you all involved in the search for coal deposits....more

No response to requests

I WOULD like to endorse JM Yates‘s letter (“Speed humps needed in Framesby street”, The Herald, April) and plead for speed humps in Framesby, especially Errol Drive....more

Of course Splash Festival was huge success, look at attendance

I AM so tired of reading about how good or bad the recent Splash Festival was. I fully agree with Fezekile Tshiwula that the Splash Festival was a huge success (“Tourism chief rejects Splash Festival criticism”, The Herald, April 30)....more

Give other top teams some coverage

AS much as I‘m an admirer of Chelsea‘s owner, Roman Abramovich, despite his silence on the victimisation of his friend and fellow oligarch, Mikhail Khodorkovsky, and Didier “The Drog” Drogba, I find the over-promotion of the team in The Herald and Weekend Post totally unnecessary. At least do appear as being impartial, because sooner or later, other teams‘ supporters will raise this issue....more

5c coin proves of little value

THE 5c coin is relatively large, cumbersome and of little value. The way retailers generally price their merchandise, one is either looking for a 5c, finding a 5c, or if not finding a 5c, getting a 5c....more
