PORT ELIZABETH

String of allegations against officer

HERALD REPORTER

A FORMER Port St Johns police superintendent, who now works in Port Elizabeth, allegedly misappropriated police tea club funds of about R250000.

The officer, who cannot be named until he appears in court, was transferred from Port St Johns to the Kabega Park police station shortly after allegations surfaced of suspected embezzlement.

A police official involved with the investigation said an audit had been done shortly after allegations were raised and confirmed that R255222 was missing from the fund.

The superintendent has since been transferred from Kabega to the Humewood police station pending the outcome of an internal hearing on an allegation of the misuse of a state vehicle.

A reliable source at the Humewood police station said that in the time the superintendent had been at Humewood he had been investigated for insubordination, sexual harassment and being absent from work for a month.

Provincial spokesman Director Miranda Mills confirmed these allegations.
