Others‘ success music to his ears Marelize Potgieter GARDEN ROUTE CORRESPONDENT A BRITISH forensic psychologist who has retired to Oudtshoorn is taking his passion for music to the people, helping talented young musicians to cut their first CDs. Dr Barry McGurk says music has been part of his life for as long as he can remember and he is passionate about helping young, upcoming artists to develop their talent. McGurk, originally from England, moved to Oudtshoorn in November and has a studio at his home where he helps young musicians record CDs. Before moving to the town, he and his wife stayed in Jeffreys Bay, where he also helped young musicians get a start. “Once I was walking in the street and I heard a young man singing while washing the windows of a building. I offered to help him to record a CD and he jumped at the opportunity. It was great, he enjoyed doing it so much.” McGurk says recording helps youngsters become more confident about their abilities. “There are so many talented people in townships who have the ability to make wonderful music, but they never get the chance.” McGurk has a digital recording board, a keyboard, microphones and guitars. He is also willing to help if the musicians need some assistance with playing instruments – he can play the piano, saxophone and guitar, among others. And, he says, the help is free. news
