Stakeholders to meet on Gamtoos estuary HERALD REPORTER NATURE lovers, government, civil and non-governmental organisations are set to join hands tomorrow to safeguard the environmental future of the Gamtoos estuary, near Jeffreys Bay. A stakeholder meeting has been organised for 9am at the Gamtoos Ferry Hotel to elect a management forum for the estuary, one of six within the Cape Floristic Region that have been chosen to pilot government‘s new “estuary management plans (EMP)”. Project co-ordinator Dr Aidan Wood, from Gleneagles Environmental Consulting, said the purpose of the forum would be to implement the EMP that had been formulated for the Gamtoos estuary by Grahamstown-based Enviro-Fish Africa, in accordance with the national estuarine management protocol. The forum would represent all stakeholders in matters affecting the estuary, its users and the surrounding area, he said yesterday. A copy of the proposed EMP may be viewed on the CSIR website. news
