Our Miss PE top 20 finalists

HERE they are, in no particular order: 20 of the most beautiful young women in the Nelson Mandela Bay area who have made it through to the hotly-contested finals of The Herald Spec-Savers Miss Port Elizabeth 2010. Only a third of the original field of 156 wannabe Miss Port Elizabeths made it through to the semi-finals and from this group of 50, only 20 have made it through to the next round ... and a chance at fame, fortune and the opportunity of a lifetime.

Depression: take it one step at a time
IT has been said that depression is the common cold of the emotional world. In many ways though it is difficult to define. We all experience ups and downs and of course what is a down for a teenager in the Bay may not be a so for a phlegmatic Karoo farmer drinking coffee on his stoep!

How to remove wax from silk
I HAVE made an awful boo-boo with a silk table runner. A candle dripped on it and made quite a mess. I removed as much as possible once the wax hardened. The following day I poured boiling water and Sunlight liquid over the oily marks and put it out to dry. To my dismay, the marks were still there. I popped into the dry cleaners – no chance! You are my last hope before I toss it out. Also, where can I get borax? I have tried pharmacies without success. Most told me it was off the market as it was dangerous. Is that true? – VA, Port Elizabeth.

Trip that’s hip, happening and out of control
THE daily commuter flight from Jo’burg to Cape Town departs at 6am every day. We call it the 4.30 Special, because that’s when you need to wake up, if you want any chance of making your flight. If you’re neurotic, you’ll probably be safer setting that alarm for 3.57am.

Occasional ‘quickie’ will enhance sex life
A VARIETY of sex is important in a relationship – so couples should try different positions and different locations as well as throwing in the occasional “quickie”.

Stuffing eggplant with sausage for delicious meal
I ONCE had eggplant stuffed with sausage at a restaurant as a starter. It was so delicious that I decided to duplicate it at home and it now forms part of our favourite recipe collection. Be sure to select eggplants that are smooth and blemish-free. Serve with a green salad. Serves four as a starter or light lunch and two as a main meal.

Travel
South Africa offers wide range of comfortable lodgings for old and young alike
IN SOUTH Africa hostels are also changing their look to appeal not only to the young adventure seeker but also to older travellers who want to take advantage of cheap accommodation but still like their creature comforts.

Garden
Making magic from rubbish
WHAT some have labelled unwanted rubbish has been cleverly re-invented in the garden of Nelson Mandela Bay resident Trudie Wegner, who has transformed her Richmond Hill garden into a wonderland of colour, concept and texture.

Food
Sage new choice on the good meal trail
MOVE over Richmond Hill, it seems Newton Park is becoming Port Elizabeth’s new hotspot for fine food and dining. The latest kid on the block is Sage, a delightful coffee shop and restaurant situated in the heart of Newton Park, in Pickering Street’s Pickering Centre.

Books
Franchise now churning out predictable thrillers
THRILLER writer James Patterson has turned himself into a franchise, the book version of Bruce Willis, if you like. Teaming up with various co-writers he trots out a wide variety of amiable cliff-hangers. And considerably less tense than Mr Willis’s Die Hard adventures.

Health
Lesson on life from man who died and lived to tell the tale
HE was clinically dead for nine minutes – an experience which has since allowed him to touch the lives of hundreds world-wide for more than 15 years. Hungarian- born Tibor Putnoki is visiting South Africa and will aim to inspire people in the Eastern Cape with his talks on “Nine decisive minutes” and “Implications for our everyday lives”.

Motoring
Sisters do it the identical way
THEY may be complete opposites when it comes to their personalities, but two Port Elizabeth beauties share a lot more than just being sisters. Weekend Post spoke to Tammy and Andrea Rathbone about their matching Toyota MR2 sports cars and the other interests they share.

Pets
Tales of the Berry Tree Bar
I have a bird bar in Walmer, in the shade of my berry tree, outside my bedroom window. Actually, I have another one also, in the back garden. But you know what they say – location, location, location. My customers clamour for the Berry Tree Bar, leaving it dry of birdbeer long before the club at the end of the garden is even halfway out of stock.
