IT was a rather unusual sight to see in the Bay to say the least. The City Slukker was visiting a new pozzie in the Humerail area when all of a sudden a stream of dinkum Playboy bunny girls poured through the door.
Huh? It’s a lucky night, thought the slukker, as the troupe of playmates decked out in traditional bunny suits – corsets, bunny ears and cottontails et al – made their way to the bar and ordered drinks. CS half expected Hugh Hefner to make an appearance next.
CS was in fact sitting at the new Buzz Bar – previously Memphizz – and sipping on a chilled lager which at R10 for a 330ml was going down rather well, especially as it had been served up so speedily.
There are two separate bar areas in the venue which, like its predecessor, is spaciously laid out with two levels to allow plenty of room to shake your booty (or whatever it is you like to shake on the dance floor on a Saturday night). There is also a relaxed couch- bedecked lounge area to chill out in with a deejay supplying the vibes.
Next thing, CS actually realised he knew one of the “bunnies” as she walked up to him with a big grin – a friend he hadn’t seen in a good few years – and she was in fact the “chief bunny” of the evening, because the event was being held in her honour, as she proudly explained to CS, on the eve of her wedding.
It was a great twist on a hen party, turning it into a bunny outing, and turning many heads in the process.
The holiday mode is in full gear all along the Eastern and Southern Cape coast and with this in mind, CS’s colleague in Plett, Timothy Twidle, has put on his slukking hat to review a new pub in Plett.
The Sportsman’s Pub and Grub that opened in October and is run by two couples, Glenn and Rebekah Stephenson and Tim and Marileen de Waal, has proven to be a haven for sports enthusiasts as well as serving good wholesome food.
When I arrived in the evening I was famished, half starved, ready to eat a bull and a biscuit.
I ordered a chicken and mushroom pie with salad and chips and a glass of dry white wine. The pub also serves pepper steak, beef curry and spinach and feta pies as well as Cornish pasties all made by Rebekah. My pie was quite delicious, the chips were piping hot and the salad was fresh, crispy and crunchy and at R25 is good value for money.
The white wine was properly chilled and at R12 per glass is very reasonably priced. A 340 ml bottle of beer ranges in price from R9 to R11, again most reasonable. The menu also has a selection of burgers, likewise served with chips and salad, that cost from R30 to R40 and a range of toasted sandwiches, again with chips and salad.
All good wholesome fare served in congenial surroundings, beneath walls draped with sporting memorabilia, rugby jerseys, sporting caps and the like and with television screens aplenty. At The Sportsman’s Pub and Grub one gets more nosh for less dosh.
Located within the Formosa Bay Resort adjacent to the N2 highway, there is also a verandah where one can eat alfresco on a pleasant day and enjoy a view of the distant Tsitsikamma Mountains.
