ANIMAL lovers are joining forces with artists to start a unique new fund-raising venture in Port Elizabeth next weekend. “Art with Heart: Artists for Animals” is an auction of quality artwork to be held at noon on Saturday, February 13 – the day before St Valentine’s Day.
Bay artist Lez Dor came up with the idea for creating a sustainable market for the sale of artworks. As she herself noted, many artists have works that lie around for a long stretch of time, unsold for one or other reason, and this auction would give the artists a chance to promote their work while at the same time helping a good cause.
She hopes the Artists for Animals Art Auction will be held every three months as a joint venture between Artistsworld and the Animal Anti-Cruelty League, in conjunction with Epsac and local artists. The plan is that artists donate a work for auction with 60% of the proceeds going to the Animal Anti-Cruelty League, and 40% going to the artist.
Schoenmakerskop art professor Greg Kerr was quick to donate his first work, with 100% of the sale next weekend going to the Animal Anti-Cruelty League.
Others who have followed his lead by offering works for the auction include respected names in the Port Elizabeth art community, such as Lez, Anthony Harris, Janice Mendelowitz, Margaret Horn, Carol Landau, Bretten-Anne Moolman and Cape Town artist Heather Hogan.
The first auction will take place at a special Valentine themed “Art with Heart” function at the Epsac Gallery in Bird Street.
“Bids will be taken over a glass of Dionysus’ nectar, while also nibbling on Cupid’s cuisine,” said Lez. The auctioneer will be Mike Bosch.
