I PROMISED myself to stop ranting and raving especially through the media, but sorry, I just can’t help myself. I thought if you get selected for a national side your development would already have taken place.

Van der Westhuizen, catch a wake-up!

All the Super 14 rugby franchises do their fair share of development to give exposure to development players such as Chiliboy Ralepelle, Bandise Maku, Earl Rose, Davon Raubeheimer, Ashley Johnson, Juan de Jongh, Alistair Hargreaves and Riaan Viljoen.

These guys have potential, but are not ready to get selected for the Springbok side (“Ralepelle to captain young guns in Bok tour opener”, The Herald, November 3)! You, Mr Snorre (Peter) de Villiers, want to tell me Western Province, who could have won the Currie Cup this year (this coming from a staunch Blue Bulls supporter), can only have three players out of a 30 men-plus squad. Rubbish!

Maku better than Tiaan Liebenberg. Raubenheimer better than Francois Louw.

Rose better than Joe Pietersen. If somebody needed to be recognised for developing, then it was this youngster.

What about Dewaldt Duvenhage at scrumhalf?

Now I am not even talking about the Cheetahs players such as Adriaan Strauss. Johnson gets selected above a phenomenal flanker like Jean Deysel from the Sharks! This is shocking!

Springbok rugby is at a high. Please do not let us lose momentum with your development plans for under-performing players just because they have the politically correct colour, especially in the Springbok side.

Let Super rugby and the Currie Cup be the forum for development and let the national team be the aspiration. – Muis van der Westhuizen, Miramar, Port Elizabeth
