WITH reference to Dean Roberts’s letter berating the police for not being at the scene sorting out a problem being caused by taxis (“Bus can’t get to stop because of parked taxis”, The Herald, November 25), I think you need to get real. Or is it my understanding a police member must be deployed to every possible spot where the taxi thugs misbehave?

I can assure you there are not enough police members available for that because these taxi drivers are a law unto their own (apologies to those few who are not), and the taxi industry and related associations need to be taken to task about the ill discipline within their ranks. Besides this is a traffic law enforcement issue so if you have a problem contact the traffic department to complain and leave the SA Police Service to focus on combating crime. – Mark Campbell, Richmond Hill, Port Elizabeth

Mark, I think you are nit picking pal ! The letter was clearly meaning Traffic cops, as he was writing about a traffic offence. Whether it is cops or traffic cops, does it need a "get real" comment, the writer is real, and is pointing out that when there is an accident, then we may see a cop. Frankly, if it needs a cop (of whatever kind) to move the taxi's on, then that is what should be done. If there are not enough vehicles, they can be dropped there on a morning, and picked up later in the day. Part of the problem is thise divide of traffic and normal cops. Law is law, and they can both make arrests. It is there will, visibility and ability which is in question.

Anyone with a tenth of a brain would know it was the traffic cops who were being referred to. This is a wasted letter.

Right- obviously he was talking about Traffic Cops, Mark! One NEVER sees them around! Even though our roads are being ripped up all over the show (i.e. Walmer) I havent even seen one traffic cop in the area controling cars.. the majority are a bunch of lazy buggers (sorry for the minority of t.cops who actually do ease their conciences by putting in a days work to earn their pay)

I would guess that he was referring to the traffic cops, however, since law enforcement officers are exactly that , does it really matter whether it is SAP or traffic cops? The reality of the situation is that neither law enforcement body is willing to take on the taxis. Walmer is a monumental stuuf uo with them doing as they please, both in Main road and 17th ave/ William Moffet. The advice given to law abiding drivers is not to antagonise them. I'm so fed up I would love to fit a missile launcher to my car and take them off the roads that way since nobody in authority seems to care. My son was run over on the pavement by one and nothing was ever done about it. They make normally easy-going, courteous drivers develop a sense of road rage that is unequalled. So Mark, stop nit-picking. We just want the madness to stop.
