Circus but no one laughing
SELDOM a day goes by that one is not left flabbergasted by what someone in the ruling party says or does. Serial motor-mouth Julius Malema, whose link between his brain and his mouth remains increasingly tenuous, is of course a prime suspect in this regard. It is almost as if his only mission in life – besides making millions through tender manipulation on the side – is to create disharmony and to insult anyone who he suspects might oppose him.

Apt decision on porn
THE mere announcement by pay TV owner Multichoice that it was conducting research into the possibility of including a porn channel in its DStv bouquets was always going to be a hot potato. To its credit, however, it has now taken note of what the research turned up – that a significant number of subscribers were opposed to “adult channels” – and has consequently canned the whole idea.

Look at development that goes further than a road
THE submission of the final environmental impact report on the proposed N2 toll road linking East London with Isipingo, south of Durban, will necessarily provoke heated debate between the “pro” and “anti” camps. There are those who believe the 560km road will bring economic benefits, particularly to the impoverished former Transkei region, and those who argue that it will result in major environmental damage to a particularly ecologically sensitive area.

Mandela doesn’t deserve his ex-wife’s castigation
WINNIE MADIKIZELA-MANDELA has yet to confirm she made the remarks attributed to her in an interview with the London Evening Standard. However if the report is accurate, they are cause for concern on two grounds. The first is the insulting way in which she referred to her former husband – this country’s first democratically elected president, Nelson Mandela – who she accused of having let black people down and to Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu.

Forensic audit needed in Kouga tender debacle
THERE has been a temptation by the government to use the Promotion of Access to Information Act as a barrier erected to prevent the right of people to gain access to information that should normally be available. The thinking behind this, we presume, is that by making the task more difficult, all but the most determined and those prepared to pay the costs will be deterred. It is in this context that the words of Port Elizabeth High Court Judge Jannie Eksteen in a case involving the Kouga Municipality need to be seen.

Shocking lack of respect for dignity of a patient
THE Bill of Rights in this country’s Constitution provides that “everyone has inherent dignity and the right to have their dignity respected and protected”. That is the yardstick against which the actions of nursing staff at Livingstone Hospital must be measured in leaving a dead woman lying naked on a bed during visiting hours and then offering a number of hollow explanations that do nothing to dispel the conclusion that they lack any respect for the dignity of the people entrusted to their care.

Zuma’s UK outburst unbefitting of president
PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma’s outburst against the British tabloids that, in customary fashion, were as rude and obnoxious as they normally are, was at best unwise as such publications are best ignored. We believe, however, his reaction does reflect yet another mistake by a man who is ill-suited for the position of head of state of this country. In the less than 12 months he has been president it has been revealed he fathered a child out of wedlock and, in his capacity as ANC president, he has shown an inability or unwillingness to compel ANC Youth League president Julius Malema to act in a manner that does not bring discredit to the ruling party.

Discipline lawless cops
ROAD hogs and drunk drivers will have free rein in Nelson Mandela Bay this weekend, as the city’s municipal traffic cops put their feet up in an ongoing go-slow that has put an end to any kind of traffic enforcement since Wednesday. Should lives be lost due to the cowboy antics of these lawless motorists, will our traffic officers be able to justify their own behaviour? They could try, but few would buy it. While the merits of their dissatisfaction are open to debate, the action these officers have chosen as a means of highlighting this dissatisfaction has destroyed any sympathy city residents may have had for them.

Pro20 glory beckons
THE buzz surrounding the progress of the Chevrolet Warriors cricket side into the Pro20 final is understandable – both from the cricketers themselves and their fans.

Provincial budget a step in the right direction
IT has long been argued that the challenge with the Eastern Cape’s budget allocation is not a shortage of funds but the ability to spend the money in a manner that eschews profligacy and ensures every cent is dedicated to improving the lives of the people of this province. This week, Finance MEC Mcebisi Jonas demonstrated that the Eastern Cape was at last acting to end an era marked by an embarrassing degree of wasteful expenditure with a series of cuts that have initially resulted in R403- million being re-allocated from non-core items with further work under way that will “yield more savings”.

Lack of discipline cause of traffic cop mayhem
THE mayhem that was caused in Nelson Mandela Bay yesterday when a large number of municipal traffic officers blocked roads in an illegal protest is a salutary example of what can happen to any organisation where discipline is absent. In a word: anarchy. For that is what it was yesterday when this undisciplined mob disrupted traffic, inconveniencing countless citizens.

Service delivery protests huge challenge for mayor
EVENTS at Wells Estate on Monday and in Mandela Village, New Brighton, indicate the levels of anger that exist within communities in the metro and the extent of the challenges facing the new administration of Mayor Zanoxolo Wayile. Protesting Wells Estate residents hounded councillors out of the Port Elizabeth area this week, while there have been similar incidents of violent civil unrest in other parts of the metro in recent months.

World Cup well on track despite the naysayers
THE challenges that would face South Africa in hosting the 2010 Fifa World Cup were inevitably different from those of a country staging the event in Europe or even other countries in the developing world. From the start, the tournament has been the subject of cynical attacks by the Afro-pessimists and criticism of its preparations continue drowning out the positive comments of, for example, English coach Fabio Capello who has expressed his satisfaction with facilities at Rustenburg where the team will establish its base camp.

Cancellation sends clear message on spending
NELSON Mandela Bay Mayor Zanoxolo Wayile must be applauded for his decision to cancel this year’s state of the metro address on the grounds that “we do not have the funds” and for stating “we have dedicated ourselves to spend every cent on service delivery”. Given the profligacy associated with such events in the past, that will send a clear message to the people in the city who have been waiting too long for housing and other basic services that meeting their demands is now the priority and funds will not be spent on boosting the egos of those in power.
