Johannesburg – The SA Rugby Union has confirmed the teams for the annual Saru interprovincial Sevens tournament on November 6-7 at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth.
Altogether 16 teams will play in the men’s tournament, while the women’s section boasts 18 sides following the inclusion of teams of the Defence and Correctional Services.
Saru spokesman Mahlubi Puzi said he was particularly pleased with the inclusion of the Defence and Correctional Services women’s teams.
There is also an added incentive for those competing in this year’s tournament, following the introduction of prize-money.
In the men’s category the winners will receive R60000 and the runners-up R40000.
The victorious women’s team will receive R30000 and the runners-up R20000.
This is the first time that Eastern Province will be staging the showcase event.
The teams who wll be competing are:
Men: Blue Bulls Tshwane, Blue Bulls Limpopo, Boland, Border, Eastern Province, Falcons, Free State, Golden Lions, Griffons, Griqualand West, KwaZulu Natal, Leopards, Lowveld, Mpumalanga, South Western Districts, Western Province.
Women: Blue Bulls Tshwane, Blue Bulls Limpopo, Boland, Border, Eastern Province A, Eastern Province B, Falcons, Free State, Golden Lions, Griffons, Griqualand West, KwaZulu-Natal, Leopards, Mpumalanga, South Western Districts, Western Province, Correctional Services, SANDF. – Sapa
