AFTER their pedestrian victory over Zimbabwe in their first match on Sunday, South Africa roared back yesterday to beat the visitors by a massive 212 runs in their second MTN one-day international (ODI) at SuperSport Park in Centurion.
Zimbabwe were chasing 332 to win, but South Africa bowled them out for 119, with 93 balls to spare.
Charl Langeveldt and Lonwabo Tsotsobe kept things tight from the start, with Zimbabwe unable to score off the first two overs.
Langeveldt had Hamilton Masakadza caught in the slips by Jacques Kallis without scoring in the third over, and in the next over, Kallis took an excellent low catch to dismiss Brendan Taylor off Tsotsobe, also for a duck.
Tatenda Taibu – who made a century in the first match – and Stuart Matsikenyeri looked as if they might frustrate South Africa as they did on Sunday with their 188- run partnership, but were able to share a stand of only 32 before Albie Morkel took the first of his three wickets to get rid of Matsikenyeri, caught behind by Mark Boucher, for 13. Two balls later, Hamilton Chigumbura was gone, brilliantly caught by Graeme Smith for four.
After that it was a matter of Zimbabwe struggling to survive.
Earlier, the Proteas’ victory was beautifully set up by JP Duminy, who scored his maiden ODI century off 82 balls, to help South Africa to their total of 331 for five.
Smith (53) and his new opening partner, Kallis, got South Africa off to an excellent start with a first- wicket partnership of 108.
AB de Villiers and Alviro Petersen both went cheaply, but Kallis and Duminy put on 78 runs for the third wicket before Kallis bottom-edged a Prosper Utseya delivery and was caught by Chigumbura for 81.
Albie Morkel made 14, but after he was caught by Masakadza off Ray Price, Duminy and Mark Boucher tore into the Zimbabwe bowling, with a partnership of 58 off 33 balls. – Sapa
