IF records are anything to go by, the Chevrolet Warriors have very little to worry about ahead of Friday’s Standard Bank Pro20 final at Axxess DSL St George’s.
The Warriors take on the bizhub Highveld Lions in the 20-over showpiece and the head-to-head record between the two side makes for exciting reading.
That is if you are a Warriors supporter and a great believer in stats never lying.
The teams have met on seven occasions since Pro20 cricket started in early 2004.
The Warriors have won seven of those and the Lions only one.
The Lions’ only victory came in 2006 when they beat the Warriors by eight wickets at the Wanderers. That loss hardly came as a surprise as the Eastern Cape franchise lost all five of their Pro20 matches that season.
Apart from that hiccup, the Warriors have cleaned up in all the others.
There have been two victories in Potchefstroom and East London and one each in Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth.
The other interesting fact to come out of the head-to-head statistics is that in the six victories over the Lions they have only batted first once.
That means they have chased down any total posted by the Lions in five previous matches.
So it will be interesting to see what Davy Jacobs opts to do if he wins the toss on Friday.
The clever money has surely got to be on batting first. It is a decided advantage to get runs on the board in any final and then let pressure and accurate bowling do the rest.
However, if Jacobs does lose the toss he will rest well in the fact that the Warriors have a solid chasing record against their opponents.
The head-to-head statistics are:
2004: Eastern Cape won by seven wickets (Potch)
2005: Warriors won by four wickets (EL)
2006: Lions won by eight wickets (Jhb)
2007: Warriors won by six wickets (EL)
2008: Warriors won by 18 runs (Potch)
2009: Warriors won by four wickets (PE)
2010: Warriors won by five wickets (Jhb)
