Though most of the metro’s petrolheads are familiar with the Guvner Motorsport Audi S3, few may realise that the white pocket rocket is now the fastest S3 in SA.
Time to Torque caught up with the Audi’s owner, Algoa Motorsport Club director Kuven Govender, who has been hard at work with his team to ensure the S3 roars into the record books.
Govender, who was crowned the Eastern Cape drag champion in 2021, said some major upgrades formed the foundation of his record-breaking run of 10.082 seconds over the standing quarter-mile at the recently held “Bragging Rights: The National Series” event at the Aldo Scribante Raceway.
“The engine was forged, cylinder head upgraded, clutches upgraded and the turbo charger was swapped to an Artek 650 from Artek Motorsport.
“We upped the power output from 390kw to 457kw,” Govender said.
“The set-up of the car in terms of putting the power [down] efficiently was also redone.
“We ran the car at the MSA Regional and Club Drag Racing event on June 4 for the first time with the new set-up and managed a 10.12 second quarter-mile on a partially prepared track.”
Govender said they knew they would be able to go quicker when the track was fully prepared — and proved the point at the weekend.
“In the first run of the day we knew that the car would be fast as the first shakedown pass was 10.24 seconds in comparison to a 10.56 second shakedown pass at the MSA event on June 4.
“During the day [Saturday], the car was consistently between 10.2 and 10.1, even when the wind and air temperature was not at its best.
“The weather forecast showed us that the best time to do a personal best was between 4pm and 4.30pm as the atmospheric conditions and grip levels on the track would be at their best, and my Guvner Motorsport Team executed that run to perfection.”
He said the car still had a bit more to give at its current power levels and would be tested at the next event on July 30.
“Huge shout-out to Euroworx, Bright’s Motorsport, MRC Tuning and all our other suppliers for helping achieve the first of three objectives with this project.
“We are going for the overall 2.0T MQB hybrid turbo world record of 9.89 seconds over a standing quarter-mile held by Ecotune in Scotland.”
Nazeer Loonat, one of the Bragging Rights organisers, confirmed Govender’s time and record.
