An allegedly illegal rehab centre operating out of a church in Motherwell was shut down by the police on Wednesday, and a 16-year-old boy rescued.

Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said the teenage boy had been taken for a medical examination and placed in the care of his grandmother.

The Motherwell family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit was investigating a case of child abuse, she said.

The boy had apparently been undergoing rehabilitation at the church premises in NU5, Motherwell.

“Police are working with the departments of social development and health and safety relating to the illegal operation of a rehab centre at the church premises,” Naidu said.
