Two men accused of the attempted murder of four SAPS anti-gang unit members during a shootout in Helenvale pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
Darryn Wentzel and Riaan Baartman, both 25, alleged members of the Boomshaka’s gang, pleaded not guilty to a total of 12 charges, including the murder of an alleged rival gang member, Leonard Roberts.
While both opted not to enter plea explanations, they submitted various admissions related to evidence collected at the two scenes.
The two face 12 charges in total, including one count of murder, five of attempted murder, two counts of contravening the Prevention of Organised Crime Act and two counts each for the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
According to the state, at about 9.30pm on November 7 2019, Roberts and another man were at a house in Lawler Street, Schauderville, when Wentzel and Baartman arrived in a VW Polo.
As the Polo, driven by a third person not yet identified, stopped outside the house, Roberts retreated behind the boundary gate of the house.
It is alleged the pair drew firearms and started shooting at Roberts.
Roberts died at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds while a second man escaped unharmed.
About 10 minutes later while travelling in Kobus Street, Helenvale, the Polo was spotted by members of the anti-gang unit who attempted to pull them over, but they drove off and a short car chase ensued.
The Polo came to a stop after turning into a cul-de-sac off Chamois Street.
Wentzel and Baartman climbed out of the Polo and allegedly opened fire on the police, who returned fire .
A 33-year-old police constable was shot in the head but has since recovered.
Six spent bullet cartridges were recovered from the scene.
The case continues.
