A five-year-old boy died after being electrocuted while playing on a municipal field in Kranshoek at the weekend.
Bitou municipal spokesperson, Andile Namntu, said the authority had launched an internal probe after the incident on Saturday.
“It is with regret that we have learnt that a five-year-old boy was electrocuted and lost his life [on Sunday].
“Initial reports indicate the electrical box at the Kranshoek sportsfield where the accident took place was vandalised, which allowed for unauthorised access to live electricity.
“Unfortunately, this is how the five-year-old boy gained access even though the municipality’s padlock was still in place.”
Namntu said the municipality would send a delegation to engage with the family.
“This is indeed a tragedy and the Bitou Municipality expresses its heartfelt condolences to the family for their loss.
“It is very sad and tragic that such a young boy would lose his life under such circumstances.”
He said the matter was now in the hands of the SAPS.
Police spokesperson Captain Malcolm Pojie said an inquest docket was being investigated.
