Armed men raided a farmhouse just outside Thornhill on Thursday night, making off with cash, a car, cellphones and three laptops.
The incident occurred at about 10pm.
Police spokesperson Captain Marius McCarthy said a 53-year-old man was at home with his family, watching TV on a farm near Thornhill, when a masked man, armed with a firearm, appeared in the passage.
He said three other suspects, also wearing balaclavas, then emerged.
“Shots were fired at two dogs, wounding one,” he said.
“The suspects asked the 53-year-old man for money and demanded the family’s cellphones.
“They then instructed the man to go with them to the main bedroom to where the safe was, and took a firearm, an undisclosed amount of cash and three laptops.”
He said the suspects then demanded the victim’s vehicle keys, and after the family was tied up in the bedroom, the suspects drove off with the man’s white Renault Clio.
It is believed the vehicle has since been recovered.
No arrests have been made and the matter is under investigation.
