Chaotic scenes unfolded at a Kariega bottle store when a well-known rugby player allegedly knocked bottles of liquor off the shelves, threw a security guard’s phone into a fridge, and stabbed a man before stripping naked.

The hours-long ordeal, which was captured on CCTV, finally came to an end when the police managed to force the still-naked Griquas prop, Kudzwai Dube, into their van.

He faces charges of attempted murder, malicious damage to property, resisting arrest and public indecency and is expected to appear in court on Thursday.

According to witnesses to the bizarre incident, the rugby player allegedly helped himself to a beer — which he proceeded to down — and indulged in an ice-cream and cigarettes he allegedly took from the spaza shop next door.

Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said the incident had occurred in Gavin Drive at about 4.30pm on Monday.

Naidu said the young man had allegedly behaved violently and aggressively.

“According to witnesses, he also started throwing bottles of liquor on the floor,” she said.

“One [person] was allegedly stabbed with a knife and was taken to hospital.

“He was treated and discharged.”

Dube’s attorney, George Malgas, said he had visited him in the cells at the Kariega police station.

“I can confirm that I have received instructions to represent him, however we have not yet consulted on the matter,” Malgas said.

“He was still very confused and I have asked that he be transferred to hospital for a psychiatric assessment.”
