Cheshire Home in Summerstrand is hoping to give one of its longtime residents a birthday to remember as Carl Fitchett approaches the big 60.

The home took to social media to pen a heartfelt appeal for a magician to put on a special one-hour show to celebrate Fitchett’s 59th birthday on June 25.

“One of my residents, Carl, has a birthday in June.

“He has no family in [Gqeberha].

“We want to do something special for his birthday and are looking for a magician to do a show,” Cheshire Home manager Deidre Burger posted on Facebook.

“Are there any magicians out there that can spare an hour for Carl and his Cheshire family?”

The post sparked a frenzy as offers to chip in streamed in from across the metro.

“We, Micoffee, can come and make coffee for everyone,” Florence Ushemakota Chizeya responded.

Madeleine Janse van Rensburg wrote: “Pop It Balloons PE would like to make Carl some special balloons for his birthday!”

Burger said she was touched by the avalanche of responses as more continued to pour in.

“Every year, we try to do something special for him for his birthday, which he usually celebrates with all the residents.

“People in [Gqeberha] have been so amazing in their response.

“I’m gobsmacked,” she said.

Burger said it had been a pleasure to fulfil one of Fitchett’s previously long-held wishes.

“He had always dreamed of winning a red Polo.

“So, with the help of a friend, I organised for him to ride in a red Ferrari.

“It was all he spoke about for weeks.

“It was an absolute highlight for him.

“The smallest things mean so much to him and, I think, he needs [another] special birthday.”

Fitchett, who has cerebral palsy, arrived at Cheshire over 31 years ago on July 1 1992, making him one of the oldest staying residents.

“He has no family here, and I think he has a cousin and maybe a sister in Cape Town.

“But he never sees them.

“His mother died many years ago, and his father about 10 years back.

“So, he’s alone ... and it would be nice to get a magician to do a show.”

By Monday, people had offered everything ranging from cooldrinks to cupcakes and fruit packs.

“They have been wonderful in reaching out to help make it an [incredible] day,” Burger said.

“The public here are the best people in the world; they’re amazing.

“So generous, hearty and compassionate.”
