It is time to raise funds and awareness for the Cancer Association of SA (CANSA) in Gqeberha this June as the Cuppa for CANSA campaign kicks off in the Friendly City.
The much-needed funds will go towards ensuring patients receiving cancer treatment in Gqeberha and surrounding areas are able to continue receiving quality care while being accommodated at the CANSA Strelitzia Care Home in Gqeberha where patients can stay for up to eight weeks.
The home provides counselling and transport to and from treatment and oncology centres.
The sustainability co-ordinator from the CANSA Gqeberha Care Centre, Marius de Vries, said they were grateful and excited to have Checkers on board for the “Cuppa season”.
“Their continuous support helps us to continue to provide our service to those impacted by cancer.
“This includes early detection through cancer education and breast, prostate and skin screenings; patient care and support; facilitation of support groups and counselling, plus wig and medical equipment hire.
“Our volunteers continue to assist with patient care, health talks and exhibition requests.
“It’s going to be a fabulous launch so come and join us,” De Vries said.
CANSA in Gqeberha, is partnering with Checkers and hosting a fundraising launch event on Saturday at Checkers in Baywest Mall, with several more planned for the rest of May.
The launch takes place from 10am to 12pm, with local comedian Francois Scholtz as the MC and Sister Penny Olwage, an occupational health nurse practitioner and breast cancer survivor, sharing her story.
Olwage was named a “Global Hero of Hope” by CANSA and the American Cancer Society for her commitment to helping and inspiring others.
The event also features a guest performance by jazz saxophonist Marcellus Wellman.
Checkers Eastern Cape public relations manager Esmerelda Essex said: “We’re delighted to be joining CANSA again and helping to raise funds for an organisation that plays a pivotal role in cancer patient care and support.
“Cuppa events will be run from June 1-30 at all the stores in the Eastern Cape.”
Coffee and treats will be sold at R20 to help raise funds for the duration of the launch.
