Captivated by Gqeberha: The Empire from the start, Despatch resident Aviwe Ngabom is thrilled to have landed a part in the popular television series filmed on home soil.
His introduction to the small screen came about when he portrayed Avukile in the Afrikaans telenovela Arendsvlei.
From there it was on to the Netflix film The Queenstown Kings.
But he always had his sights set on Tshedza Pictures’ Gqeberha: The Empire.
Set and filmed in Gqeberha, it is a gripping South African series that delves into the intricate dynamics of the influential Mxenge family, entwined with themes of love, power and deception.
The show premiered on January 16 2023, and offers a substantial season run of 260 episodes.
For Ngabom, the role signifies the fulfilment of a long-held aspiration, having been captivated by the show from its inception.
“I’m convinced my dedication and skills have carved out my place in the show, promising the audience a riveting portrayal,” he said.
In preparation for the role, Ngabom spent three days conducting research into the part, drawing inspiration from American actor Denzel Washington’s acclaimed performances.
Now aged 26, Ngabom recounted the hurdles he had to overcome on his path to success.
“Keen to be part of the series, I endured a year of anticipation and numerous auditions before securing the role of Xolani Mali, a character driven by vengeance against the protagonist, Hlumelo Mgxenge.
“I auditioned for this and other parts in March.
“The excitement was palpable, yet tempered by past disappointments. But my sole desire was to be on set.
“And indeed, I joined the set the very next day after the auditions.”
Ngabom extended his heartfelt thanks to his colleagues, particularly Oros Mampofu and Tembinkosi Ngcukana, for their guidance in shaping his performance.
He also encouraged emerging Eastern Cape actors to seize every chance to hone their skills.
“The tide of opportunity is upon us. Embrace it, aim high, and dazzle.
“Trust in your abilities, use your resources, and leave your imprint. The world eagerly awaits,” he said.
