Bitou municipal mayor Claude Terblanche has been ousted through a motion of no confidence.

Terblanche, a member of the Plett Democratic Congress (PDC) was replaced by DA councillor Jessica Kamkam who was voted in as mayor shortly after the motion of no confidence.

The DA, Active United Front (AUF) and Ikhwezi Political Movement (IPM) submitted a motion of no confidence against Terblanche on August 8 calling for his removal.

Today's special council meeting follows Thursday's meeting meant to debate the motion but saw the former coalition, consisting of the ANC, Plett Democratic Congress (PDC), PA and the Ikhwezi Political Movement (IPM).

However, the IPM remained seated with opposition parties during the walkout.

The new coalition is made up of the DA (5 seats) AUF and IPM who hold a seat each. Combined, they have seven out of 13 seats in council.

Nokuzola Kolwapi was re-elected deputy mayor while Mavis Busakwe of AUF was elected speaker.
