Public urged to attend meetings on ward demarcation

Nelson Mandela Bay speaker Eugene Johnson has called on residents and stakeholders to attend public meetings hosted by the Municipal Demarcation Board from Wednesday to Friday.

The meetings will give reasons, processes and benefits of ward boundary changes.

This process will determine how wards are structured, the number of voting districts and the number of councillors in the municipality.

Wards are altered — if necessary — every five years to deal with the number of registered voters as a result of migration and the enrolment of new people on the voters’ roll.

Boundary changes could see wards switch hands politically and shift the power dynamics.

The meetings have been structured in a cluster approach:

  • Govan Mbeki (14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 and 22) Nangoza Jebe Hall on Wednesday at 10am;
  • Alex Matikinca (23, 53, 54, 55, 56, 57, 58, 59 and 60) Raymond Mhlaba Hall on Wednesday at 2pm;
  • Zola Nqini (41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48, 49, 50, 51 and 52) Uitenhage Town Hall on Thursday at 10am;
  • Champion Galela (23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 36) Veeplaas Hall on Thursday at 2pm;
  • Molly Blackburn (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 12, 39 and 40) City Hall on Friday at 10am; and
  • Lillian Diedericks (10, 11, 13, 29, 31, 32, 34, 35, 37 and 38) Gelvandale Hall on Friday at 1pm.
