Nico Malan High School pupil Bryan Katoo returned home a hero after making his international debut at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Lima, Peru, and claiming a silver medal.
The matric pupil at the Humansdorp school formed part of the 4x400m relay team during the championships from August 27 to 31.
He overcame injuries and qualified at the Athletics SA meet with a personal best time of 46.53 seconds on his birthday on March 22.
His father, Khaya, said he could not be prouder of their “farm boy” who had made the whole community of Hankey — where he was born — Patensie and Kouga exceptionally proud.
“I was privileged to watch his first race when he was only seven and I told my wife ‘this boy can run’.
“He has been consistent from age 11, reaching SA schools until now, his matric year.
“He was a very good rugby player at primary school but decided to stick to athletics when he reached high school.
“The nice thing of our valley, the community is very supportive. The whole Gamtoos Valley and Kouga community has a great love for Bryan and supports him.
“He is a great inspiration for many up-and-coming athletes.”
Khaya said the 18-year-old opted to specialise in the 400m event after suffering an injury in 2022 and the journey to the world stage had not been easy.
“Most of the competitions happen outside the province. It is not always easy to compete against other provinces because of costs.
“Also, Bryan stays 80km from PE [Gqeberha], he mostly trains on grass and does not have regular access to a tartan track.
“We try to get him the proper athletic attire whenever he needs it.
“We feel very blessed and proud to have Bryan as our son.
“To watch him achieve this milestone and compete against the world’s best, we want him to embrace every opportunity and enjoy every moment.
“Also to stay humble of his achievements.”
He said Bryan had developed a good balance between sports and academics with a promising outlook for the future.
“He wants to study Financial Accounting and wants to go to a good university to excel both in sports and studies.
“Bryan’s future looks very promising and we will support any decision he feels comfortable with.
“He wants to qualify for the Olympics if it’s God’s will.”
