A Zwide man accused of fatally stabbing a police officer in September is expected to bring a formal bail application when he returns to the New Brighton Magistrate’s Court next week.

Akhona Zamxaka, 28, briefly took to the dock on Wednesday after his arrest last week.

He is accused of fatally stabbing 26-year-old Constable Lwando Msezeni in the neck.

Msezeni died at the scene.

On September 21, at about 11.15pm, Msezeni had left a Kwazakhele tavern with his partner.

As they were walking down Somfula Street, two men, both wearing balaclavas, approached them.

An altercation ensued, ending with Msezeni being stabbed in the neck and the suspects fleeing with his cellphone.

Msezeni was declared dead at the scene.

An investigation by members of the Serious Organised Crime Investigations Unit of the Hawks resulted in the arrest of Zamxaka, who made his first court appearance last week.

He returned to court on Wednesday, where the matter was postponed to October 30 for the court to receive information on whether he has any previous convictions or pending cases.

Zamxaka is then likely to apply for bail.

He remains in custody.
