A Knysna pilot is taking tourism in a new direction, offering holidaymakers and locals alike an opportunity to explore the scenic town from the sky.

Born and bred in Knysna, Duran de Villiers said his love for flying had inspired him to launch AER Helicopters.

The new activity, the first helicopter tour service in Knysna, is packed with adventure, adding to the already exciting line-up of activities the town has to offer this festive season.

“Duran’s love for flying and his deep connection to the town inspired him to start the business,” AER Helicopters’ Nicole du Plessis said.

“His goal was to share the thrill and beauty of aviation with others while showcasing Knysna’s stunning landscapes from an entirely new perspective.”

The helicopter rides will take people on a tour of the Knysna Heads, the Knysna Lagoon, Knysna Forest, Noetzie beach and nature reserve, Buffalo Bay, Brenton-on-Sea, Plettenberg Bay and Robberg among other amazing destinations — all from a bird’s-eye view.

According to Du Plessis, they chose the area for its unparalleled natural beauty and diversity, offering guests a unique perspective of the landscapes from pristine beaches and dramatic cliffs to lush forests and serene waterways.

“These landmarks are not only visually stunning but also represent the heart and soul of what makes the Garden Route such a special destination,” she said.

She said the helicopter tours and charters added significant value to Knysna’s tourism industry, attracting both local and international visitors seeking unique, high-end experiences.

Due to the number of tourists they had already managed to attract since its launch in September, it had boosted revenue for the town with tourists spending on accommodation, dining, shopping and other local attractions.

“Additionally, helicopter operations support job creation along with partnerships with local businesses such as hotels and travel agencies.”

De Villiers said by providing a unique way to experience the area, they were encouraging more visitors to choose Knysna as a holiday destination and provide visitors with an unforgettable experience that showcased Knysna’s beauty from a different viewpoint.

“By combining luxury experiences with community upliftment, we aim to make a positive impact on Knysna’s growth and appeal as a premier destination,” he said.

Booking can be made via WhatsApp on 082-767-1059.

There are also various packages to choose from.

There is a 15-minute flight over the world-famous Knysna Heads, or The Milk Run for 30 minutes where guests get to experience the low-level passes along the coast from Sedgefield to Buffels Bay, finishing with a scenic tour of the Knysna Heads.

Mountain picnics can also be booked. Prices vary.
